Congratulations to the NC students who competed in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environmental Project Olympiad

Nine North Carolina students demonstrated their excellence in science, engineering, and technology during the Second Annual International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering & Environment) Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP 2010) in Houston, Texas.

Nearly 1,200 young scientists and project supervisors from 70 different countries displayed 450 highly qualified projects at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston from April 14 through April 19, 2010.

“The success of our North Carolina students in I-SWEEEP demonstrates the creativity and excellence of our students in science, engineering, and technology. We need to encourage and support our students in developing these interests for future careers,” stated Judy Day, director of the NC Science and Engineering Fair.

Finalist students were selected to compete at I-SWEEEP by winning a top prize at a local, regional, state or national science fair. Participants also had an opportunity to meet students from different parts of the world and share their respective commitment to exploring scientific solutions for a variety of global problems.

“I-SWEEEP is a wonderful example of an opportunity for sharing scientific and engineering research among students. Competitions such as these encourage students to get deeply engaged in research – an ability that will serve these students well in the future,” according to Sam Houston, president and CEO of the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center.
