Volunteer with the Scientific Review Committee

The North Carolina Science Fair Foundation invites science and engineering professionals to participate in the Scientific Review Committee (SRC) for the North Carolina State Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF).

The SRC reviews and advises student research projects to ensure that projects are conducted safely, ethically, and responsibly. In addition, the SRC evaluates student research plans, certifications, projects, and exhibits for compliance with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Rules. For this reason, we invite individuals with a variety of areas of scientific, engineering, and mathematics expertise to help in this important work. The fair hosts students from the elementary through the high school levels, and the project themes are quite diverse, so individuals with experience in all STEM fields are welcome.

SRC instructional material and presentation slides will be made available in early February for new members, and we plan to have a brief orientation at the start of the first in-person meeting. There will be 5 in-person project meetings at Rho in Chapel Hill (6330 Quadrangle Drive, Chapel Hill) in mid-February through March to review projects in advance of the Science Fair. These meetings will be on Saturday mornings starting at 10 AM and will last approximately 2-4 hours, depending on the number of projects and the number of volunteers we have. The dates of the meetings will be February 16 and 23 and March 2, 9, and 16. While we encourage volunteers to attend all meetings if possible, we are grateful for any help you can provide, even if it is only one or two meetings.

If you are interested in serving on this year’s SRC, please fill out the short NCSEF Availability Survey. Please provide your name, email contact information, and area of professional expertise. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Please remember to add our email address (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) to your contacts list to prevent any future communications being lost to spam.

We also encourage you to forward this invitation to any qualified friends or colleagues that might be interested in helping out with this rewarding volunteer opportunity.

Thank you so much for your interest!
